Library Instruction and Tours

The Gerald R. Sherratt Library offers a wide variety of library-related assistance and instruction.  Library instruction has a high priority among the library’s public service programs.  The goal of library instruction is to improve the quality of students’ academic work and increase their independence in learning.

Several kinds of library instruction are available.  General orientations will introduce students to the use of the SUU library catalog and multidisciplinary, periodical indexes.  Course-focused instruction will help students locate and use the library resources appropriate for your course, subject, or assignment.  Library instruction is conducted in the Sherratt Library, Room 002, which is equipped with a computer and projector to demonstrate the use of electronic information resources. Demonstrations of both print and electronic resources can be arranged.  With smaller classes of 20-25 students, the last part of the orientation can be conducted on lobby computers, where the students can get hands-on experience using library databases.

If you would like to do your own instruction or bring your class in for group research, contact us to schedule your time and to confirm the availability of resources.

Requesting Library Instruction
During the first weeks of each semester, we receive a great number of requests for library instruction sessions.  Each request will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis.  Time is needed to prepare for a course-specific orientation, so when you request library instruction, please help us to maximize the effectiveness of your session by doing the following things:
  • Submit your request at least 1-2 weeks in advance.
  • Provide us with a copy of your course syllabus and/or the specific assignment, and a list of potential topics for your students.
  • Ask your students to come to the session prepared with topics they want to research.
  • Plan to attend the requested session(s) yourself to help assist your students in learning to use library resources.
To schedule a session for your class, please contact the library using the web form, or e-mail, or phone or fax:
Web Form:  Library Instruction Request Form
E-mail: LibInstruction@suu.edu
Voice: (435) 586-7947
Fax: (435) 865-8152

As a faculty member, if you would like a personalized orientation to the library, a demonstration of new information databases available in the library, or just a brush-up on library resources, contact us to schedule an appointment.  A librarian will meet with you and point out any library services and information sources (print or electronic) that may be useful in your discipline.

Librarians are also available to give orientations to groups of faculty from a department and to assist faculty in developing class assignments that utilize library resources.

Offered every semester, this is a one-credit, self-paced, on-line web course that will introduce students to the services and resources of the SUU Library, and start them on their way to doing library research
